She comes to me in dreams, and at moments in the street after work, at five o’clock, in that ecstatic period before the fish markets close, and in my bed at night, where she still lives, as alive as the one who lies beside you.... There you lie. Nothing a man of my qualities could ever say would track you down. I’ve spent too many days hustling food and shelter. My hands are scarred, and my face and voice, from hard labor and fist work. It was all boring, but all necessary....There you lie. Your arms perfect for battle and sleep. Eyes closed, watching something I’ll never see. Relaxed as I can never relax. Your nipples hard for some reason.

From the Archives: Guests Seen and Unseen

I know there are guests in my home by the objects, personal effects that are in sight. I have the thought that, unlike Goldilocks, they have not been sleeping in my bed. There is a kite, or another item representing flight and freedom. When I touch this object I see myself on a hilltop with the wind blowing.

Glancing at the items around the room, I see that there is a Christmas tree in a corner. It is about time I took the tree down…Laurie

Once you understand the symbolic nature of physical reality, then you will no longer feel entrapped by it. You have formed the symbols, and therefore you can change them. You must learn, of course, what the various symbols mean in your own life, and how to translate their meaning.

From the Archives: Dreaming Anothers Life

Some thoughts on my Oct. 25th dream post Re: dreaming another’s life. It’s interesting to think that your dream relates to someone else’s life and then one has to ask why?

Lisa suggests that this is because everyone in your life mirrors an aspect of yourself. I think of this in it’s widest possible context, one that isn’t just about mimicry per se. In other words because I dreamt of feeling angry towards the friend in my dream and interpreted it as the mothers anger towards her daughter doesn’t necessarily mean I am dealing with my own anger against someone else in a specific sense (although it could). It might be that I played a helper role with the mother choosing to help her process those feelings. I tried often to do this in the year before she died. She was very bitter about her life. Or perhaps my own curiosity led me to want to directly experience where she was at. I can recall now before my dream wondering how the mother was doing in the afterlife.

I’m wondering if this is the level of communication we get all the time from others, “knowing” so well that it seems to be us events are occurring to. Or perhaps we’re acting as guides to each other, helping each other process our “stuff” by immersing ourselves fully into another’s drama.

I’m recalling here Seth and his mentioning that he and another entity took on roles of religious characters to help someone who had just died.

I think if reality is about each one of us creating our own unique world and we depend upon telepathy, is this type of dream knowing what telepathy is. Or is telepathy more about physic projections of our inner agreements and the dreaming is an even deeper more intimately felt experience. When I compare some dream experiences with physical reality experience it seems so emotionally richer, more expansive.

I find that my sense of another’s emotions is something that I’m getting better at.

I can recall throughout my life when suddenly i would feel like I was looking out of a person’s perspective, like I suddenly became them for a brief instant but that was always a curious detached kind of experience, and not really an emotional one.

I think it’s one of the big lessons of my lifetime to learn more about emotional depths. In my own household growing up there was a lot of anger, depression, suffering of all kinds. I explored it all quite deeply and later with the Seth books came to realize that I no longer wanted to go there. Now, I’m into exploring peace, love, contentment with the same zeal I had for the other states. This is not to say that I no longer get angry or depressed but rather my desire to understand anything deep about those emotions has already been fulfilled, so I tend to accept, then focus elsewhere. Perhaps this is what the mother reflected for me in the dream, a generally opposite relationship to anger than what I presently hold; I did feel afterwards that I was still trying to assist her.

She comes to me in dreams, afraid to fully reveal herself And though she has tried to hide, I have come to know her. She is both selfish and caring, Childish yet comforting, Compassionate and passionate, Uniquely woman. She stands before me, possessed of the love I am seeking Yet I cannot reach her, an impassable void between us Her heart and soul locked away by a lover’s curse. I try in vain to reach her, chasing her siren’s song across the waves ‘Til I can hear no more, a roaring silence surrounds me. And from the shadows, a mocking laugh, mischievous and full of life A lover at a masquerade ball daring me to find her and Knowing that I will always pursue her.

Personal association, therefore, is highly involved with your personal bank of symbols, and it operates in the dream states precisely as in waking life – but with greater freedom, drawing from the future, in your terms, as well as from the past. Therefore, you have greater use of symbolism in the dream state, for you are of past and future symbols.

Film -The Dreamer and the Dreamtribe

In a segment of the documentary film “The Dreamer and the DreamTribe” by Arto Halonen, a tribesman cannot interpret his dream and tells the local shaman. In the dream the tribesman is hunting with friends who attempt to cross a small river. The log they use gives way and the dreamer has to be pulled back to the shore by his friends. The local shaman is baffled and calls in shamans from other villages. After many hours of deliberation they finally come to a conclusion about the meaning of the dream. It will rain next Tuesday. The answer may seem rather disappointing to our modern ear that expects to hear something relevant to its own life experience and no longer finds in a rainstorm anything but a temporary nuisance. The Malaysian village, on the other hand, experienced a cycle of socio-spiritual events that profoundly moved them and reconnected them with their cosmos at every level. That the profundity “Its going to rain next Tuesday.” escapes us, is the degree to which the simulacrum has taken up residence in our life and exposed our inability to recover the real. If you are not bothered by this and simply amused that anyone would even care, then the simulacra has fully actualized and all connections between signs and what they represent have been lost to cynical hyperextention.

Portrait of a Dreamworker

When she was young, her dream interpretations carefully reflected the life and reality of the dreamer, almost like she was a landscape artist. Later, her own versions of reality began to appear in her interpretations. Some saw this as her distortion of reality phase, others as drawing the world through her own reality. The interpretations often seemed to mask and pervert the reality of the dreamer. Then a desperation began to emerge, and her interpretations masked the absence of reality, as if to protect herself and others from a flaw at the center of the universe. Finally, her interpretations bore no relation to any reality whatever and reproductions of images that had no original began to proliferate.

D.A.S. - Thermal Images

Thoughts however are connected with language and with highly organized ego development. They are translations and symbols for inner activity. As a rule they are highly physically oriented, their function being to acquaint the physically adapted ego with some inner data. The thoughts may rather faithfully, though never completely, translate such data, or they may considerably distort it. Behind thoughts are images, which are more basic but still physically oriented. Because they are more basic they have a stronger effect. They are more emotionally charged, more concise than thoughts, and they are directly connected with the mechanics involved in translating inner data to physical reality. Behind these, so to speak, exist what you may term temperature pictures, in which delicate gradations of heat form ever-shifting emotional patterns that so have a semi-physical outline. From these, you see, normal images are built up, and from the images thoughts are formed...Thus thought becomes an inner image which is translated into a thermal image, and then into intuitional form, into highly condensed and codified data, and then into a pure and direct sort of experience which you cannot understand as physical creatures.

From the Archives: Dream Practise

This is a neat dream I had a couple months ago but I’ve been working with it so thought I’d share it here.

Dreamt my sister and I were staying at a house and I start practicing a telepathic exercise. I concentrate on images I have of a house; while I’m doing that the dream reality merges with my visual projections so that I begin to reside in the house that I am thinking of.

I concentrate so that my sister can see the images. I focus on projecting a river setting in the backyard but my attention wavers and every so often this slips into a really posh swimming pool setting.

My sister has partial success in seeing my projected images. Then I move slowly through the house focusing on various pieces of furniture and I am amazed and delighted when she starts seeing this clearly. Out in the backyard I again re-image the river stream with wild flowers growing on the bank. My sister only gets fragments of information but after trying several times she receives it clearly.

Then I translate the image into a backyard pool again. I’m lucid, aware of all my dream creations. At the side there are 4 people watching and I’m bugged that I can’t make them disappear which then has me wondering how much I’m superficially creating and how much might be on a deeper level. The people seem to be checking out how well I’m doing. At the very back of the yard the projections ended and I felt like I was looking at an area not inhabited by human thought processes.

I couldn’t extend any visual data beyond this space. We talked of going for a swim which became kind of confusing for me because I wondered what would go on in each mental/physical level I was aware of while in this reality creation. We then tried to reverse the roles so that my sister would project and I would receive but it wasn’t as successful and I knew I needed more practice.

When I woke, I looked at my foot and could see through the flesh, watching the blood cells travel along its various pathways. I then woke up, realizing the false awakening.

I felt really great after this dream. Like I’d been learning a particular challenging skill which was invigorating on multiple levels. Lately I’ve been working informally with this telepathy with my sister though I haven’t told her what I’m doing. When we’re out and there’s others with us, I send my sister images of what I want her to mention and she invariably does. The other side of the coin is I have to suppress my thoughts when I don’t want her to mention something.

Postmodern Dreaming

Psychotherapist Carl Jung once asked a Native American why they performed the sun ritual. He learned that without the ritual, the sun would not rise again and time would end. This is the responsibility of freedom through virtualization. We can use it to create or destroy time. Making time may not involve a complex ritual, but it does require something like a ritual. When Jesus came across a man working in the field on a sacred day, he simply said “If you know what you are doing, fine, but if not, you are really in trouble."

In this sense, the dream sharing online becomes a digital sacrament that creates time and space. Recalling the dream creates time and space in waking life. Sharing the dream creates time and space for a whole group. The particular interpretive system is not so important as the ability of the system to keep the dream present long enough to create a rupture in normal time. In Aboriginal Dream Time, there is the notion of time outside of time. That is, it doesn’t directly partake in the everyday swirl of media and commercial signs, but rather is aligned to a symbolic order outside of time, a sacred time. Here the project of speed is exposed as game whose terminal limits seek a field of digital ice without friction, a false freedom that pretends to connect everything to everything else and ends in leaving nothing but the icy surface of empty death. Although dreamwork is not the only way to create time and space, it does provide a useful set practices which address how to take control of the throttle and create time/space in a world moving at the speed of light.

P.S.

Wouldn’t your friends in waking life think it was odd if you said, “Oh, glad to see you again, hey this is what you represent to me...”, or “let me interpret you!”
