Horus and Seth – the battle between Time and Chaos

An analysis and symbolic view of the ancient god’s saga of Egypt in relation to the human's perception and interpretation skill as well as an analogy to the loss of the unity of the self
by © Jonathan Dilas, 2002

In the ancient Egypt there were different gods and semi-gods, who had been created by the people to personalize collective characters and powers. On the other hand others talk about contacts to aliens or maybe beings from beyond, with which the ancient Egypt had been in contact. This is totally unclear and cannot be proofed though.

The Myth

Seth has been an ancient god with a bad reputation. He has killed his brother Osiris to ascend the throne. This killing illustrates, that Seth tore apart Osiris into 16 pieces and dispersed him over the whole land. Although Seth has been illustrated as an evil god and still is, there are ambiguous reports about his wickedness while his kingship. Nobody said explicitly, that he has caused chaos that has been effected by his kingship; because the evil snake Apophis, a strange creature with bad intentions, has been defeated by Seth and he has saved the Egyptian people. The people was important for him, because what was a kingship without them? Horus, the son of Osiris and Isis, swore to take revenge for Seth’s doings when he heard about his father’s death. As he grew up, he overturned the kingship of Seth and absorbed his regency over the people. But the fight between Horus and Seth took long. At the end Horus won, tore Seth apart and dispersed him over the land, too. Horus did not leave the battlefield without hurting, because Seth had stolen Horus' left eye and hid it in the desert. Horus has never retrieved his left eye. But from this moment on the people admired the holy eye and it became a part of many legends and stories. It also appears on many papyrus and tablets. In addition to that the freemasons wear this eye in their logo as well as you can find it on the one dollar note of America.

Short meaning overview

Horus stands in his meaning for the "in every king incarnated god". Every following king owned the name "Horus" in his title. Seth stands for the god of chaos, the darkness and in all foreign lands as the one "who belongs to the dark side" and as "the one to stay mum about". The left eye of Horus is also called "Moon Eye" or "Dream Eye". Isis is always shown as a mother, who holds Horus in her arms. Osiris is translated in his meaning as "Position of the Eye". Isis is also called "Sorceress" or "The high Sorceress". These meanings are definitely researched.

Similes to the Christian Myth

The biblical figures Cain and Abel were two antagonized brothers and liked to fight each other. Abel’s son was called Seth and here we can see a connection to the Egyptian myth. If we assumed, that there is a little mistake in the bible and that the names Seth and Cain have been exchanged, that is, Seth has been the brother of Abel and Cain has been Abel’s son, then we would have a very clear agreement to the Christian myth. Also Isis, who looks like the Virgin Mary, who holds her holy child in her arms, shows amazing parallels. If these coherences are viewed as symbolic accordances, we can start to question, how such a myth could be remained in an always new robe until the present time. The highest god Ra could be compared with he biblical god Elohim.

Horus and Seth as options of perceptions – Horus defeats Seth

That there is a meaning of time within the name Horus is more than evident, because "hora" is translated to "hour" or "time" in some languages in the present time. This parallel shall stands for the chronological perception of man. Seth means in this context a chaotic perception, the perception of other worlds and a non-time interpretation of the perceived reality of man. From the beginning of the childhood we are taught to perceive causal and chronological. If a child processes an action, so it will be called to account after it to let it know that it has to learn a certain perceptional order. The child is called to adopt the order of perception of its parents. The victory over Seth is a living and an everlasting myth that is still practised and active.

The Fragmentation of the unity of the Self - the Birth of the Ego and the loss of the Dream World

Seth tore apart Osiris and Horus Seth. To tear apart Seth can be compared with the fragmentation of the unity of the self. Horus lost his dream eye and this has made possible the time perception, because just without a clear and direct memory of the dream world the perception can be ordered in a chronological way. Horus as the incarnated person becomes clearer in his symbolic and represents in this ancient Egypt myth the ego, the all-day-reality ego with his physical body. The loss of the dream worlds, that is, the conscious non-stop access to it, is related to the memory of it and implies the order and selection of perceived sequences, a kind of order of the perception after intensity, clearness, individuality and egoism.

The Dream-Eye

Horus lost his left eye in the fight against Seth (acc. to the memory and clear non-stop perception of dreams, lucid dreaming or OBE maybe) and lives from this moment on as a one-eyed man. A parallel to the so called third eye is also evident, as perceiving energies that has been mentioned in many religions and esoteric books, for example, the usage of the third eye to "see" energies and also non-physical beings from the other side. The alternative labeling "Moon-Eye" points to the night, the darkness, in which Seth seemed to live (acc. to night dreams).

Order and Chaos - Seth as God of the desert and chaos

Already in the bible all being develops from the chaos (e.g. big bang). This could be the moment of birth of chronology and the causal interpretation, cause and effect. In the bible we can find "But the earth was desert and mazy." The Greek word "chaos" indicates a deep abyss or a deep emptiness. The known philosophers Plato and Anaxagoras see in the chaos the bodiless, non-physical and unformed primary matter, the pure energy from which all comes to life. The theory of chaos is not postulated as the totally disorder by the physicians, but as a kind of order or another order, that is not causal or chronological. A known example is the disperse of billiard balls after the first shot in relation to the physician’s law of shots. Every shot is processed with a similar strength, but the different disperse of the balls is out of all proportion to it. The order is chaotic. At the physicians it is spoken of a deterministic chaos, that is, there is still an order, but it is hidden. The problem is just, that this hidden order and the evident chaos just can be perceived in order and not at the same time. One could say that the theoreticians of the chaos try to find an order in a mazy pattern nevertheless. This order has not to be chronological, but make sense. A sea with a certain amount of fish may be empty faster if not only birds but anglers catch the fishes. But in a process of years the system adopts itself to the additional hunters and balances it out still in an unresearched and chaotic way. Also known is the minimal air turbulence, that is, that the wings of a butterfly cause and raise a storm, or the straw that breaks the camel's back, or the last degree from 99 to 100 that boils the water finally. A chaotic perception implies an order, but just the human beings understand this order as a chronological string together of perceived sequences. According to brain research every human perceives just 3 second sequences of perception that we order in a certain kind and remember. What happens if the human remembers at this point thematically and not causal his past because the single alternative order within our world is the thematically one. Search engines in the World Wide Web demonstrate this very well. An order, for example after the alphabet, can be sorted to the chronological order, because instead of letters we can use also numbers.

The ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs vs. word for word translation

The breakthrough for the translation of the cryptically Egypt hieroglyphs is the finding of a Greek table with Greek and Egyptian symbols. The researcher could compare the signs and solve the riddle. Of course, however, it is unclear if this table was a desperate attempt to understand these hieroglyphs, but fact is, that the translations of the hieroglyphs reminds of a symbol language. All languages on our planet are word orientated and spoken words are taken for verbatim. So we can remember the nomenclature of the western Indians like "Standing tree", "Calling bird" or "the one who dances with wolves" and so on. These names result from a story that the Indian child perceived in its past. Maybe a horde of bison ran into the direction where this little child stood and it imitates a tree, so that all bisons bypassed the "tree" and the child survived. The witnesses of this amazing story called this child "Standing tree" from this moment on. Within this context someone can recall names much better. There exists this joke about the Indian child that is called "bursted rubber". What I try to say is that the possibility of a language with image and symbol patterns is usable. In the case of the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and its word for word translation soon reminds of a language of symbols.

Examples

"You are Re who came from Nut. From her who births Re daily."

"Be greeted Re with your rise. Great falcon with decorated breast. May you awake in the early morning. Cheering sounding to you in the evening."

"The writing of the hidden room. The places of Ba's souls and the gods. The shadow and the romanticized and what they do. The beginning is the horn of the west."

"How beautiful you appear at the horizon of the sky. You living Ator, who lived at first. You walk up to the eastern horizon and light every land with your beauty. Your rays embrace all lands, so many you have made of. You are far and your rays are on earth. You are the visage of the man, but one cannot see your way. If you go under in the west so the earth is in dark as it would be dead. The earth lies in silence, because the one who creates it rests in his horizon. If the day comes and you merge again, glowing as Ator in the day, so you banish the darkness and presents your rays. You who gives breathe, for animating all of your creatures. You set everyone to his place and you give them, what they need."

Again, there are always to find esoteric quotations, if you look for Egyptian myth a bit.

"Sky and earth agreed to a pact to destroy all what have been." Just the day dreamer calls back the shadows of the past. And wattle nets out of unspun threads." Naturally not all translations are just meant symbolically and could sound poetically or pathetically, but they always lean on it. If a word for word translation like "Isis stands in the third house" has a pure symbolical meaning und represents maybe an emotional state or a certain state of the mind or the consciousness, then it may become clearer, how difficult it is to understand this ancient writings and language. The known hieroglyphs have been changed in the later dynasties and they developed itself to a more and more literally cuneiform writing that reminds of Greek. Already a simple argumentation with the history of the Egyptian scripture represents this clearly. Especially the religious texts are very cryptical and give riddles for the readers. It is hard to understand and in my opinion it is cryptic, while the language is visually or symbolically, descriptions of states and situations and not explanations. For example, in many vignettes of the legendary "Egyptian book of the death" you can find the "lull of heart". As soon as someone dies he will be lead by Anubis to court. His heart (the symbol for the will) is placed on a scale. On the other scale is placed the symbol for Maat, it stands for truth. If the result is not satisfactory the deceased will be thrown into the underworld. Many symbols are already placed here and maybe this delivers an idea, how fast someone can fall for such a translation.

Also very describable is the so called "Hymn to the Sirius":
"Salutary Sothis star!
Isis, you ruler of the sky.
You queen of rising souls of the gods.
Glowing in heaven next to her brother Osiris,
she walks on his track forever,
while she defeats the snake Apophis
by the glory speeches of her mouth.
You glow at the sky near to the day god Re
in this of your name of the Chut ("the Glowing")
You are powerful on earth
next to the god of earth Satur,
in this of your name the mighty.
You are great in the deep
in this of your name is Tanert ("the Great")
You make swells to Nil,
in this of your name the godly Sothis,
You receive and make fruitful the field
in this of your name Anukit ("the Uncatched")
You create all what is, spending lives to all human beings,
in this of your name Anchet ("the Living").
Rotating near to Orion
you unite yourself with the life in the west and the sky."
(Source: Bernd Zabka, „Siderisch-solare Astrologie“)
Names and States
Names are constituted as characters or powers, as it may have been noticed in relation to some gods. For example, "Ba" means "Soul after death" and describes a state that can be viewed as post mortal. „Ka“ is the dream bird, who pulls the dreamer out of his body at night and as soon as the sun raises it brings him back again. Ka and Ba are comparable and own a direct link within their meaning. „Hor“ reminds of Horus and this means as much as "the buried person". In this case you can see again a connection to the incarnated or physical interpretation of the symbolical person Horus.

Interpretations in the worldwide history

Ever and ever again you can see while researching the literature that the results are literally interpreted and have been supplemented freely, if enough information had not been available. The discovery of the following incomplete papyrus has been studied at first by a priest and then by an Egyptologist. The results are as follows:

To picture 1:

Interpretation of the church:

1: The angel of the Lord
2: Abraham bounded on an altar
3: The servant of Elkena tries to sacrifice Abraham.
4: The altar of sacrifice; it stands in front of the tin gods Elkena, Libna, Mamakra, Korasch udn Pharao
5: The tin god Libns
6: The tin god of Libna
7: The tin god of Mamakra
8: The tin god of Korasch
9: The tin god of Pharao
10: Abraham in Egypt
11: This represents the column of the heaven as it has been imagined by the Egyptians.
12: Raqia, it means the wideness or the strong arch above us.

To picture 2:

Interpretation of the Egyptologists:

The image shows a mystical embalmment and resurrection of Osiris, the Egyptian god of the underworld. Osiris has been torn apart by the jealous brother Seth, who cut his body into 16 pieces. But Isis, the beloved wife of Osiris, collected the pieces patiently and joined them together. The dog-like god Anubis is shown as he embalms the body of Osiris on the traditional lion headed bier, so that he can turn back to life. Osiris holds one of his hands above his head, the palm shows down as a sign of Gram, while his soul or Ba, here shown as a bird with a human head, tries to enter his body. While Isis herself has transformed to a falcon and flies above Osiris, he holds his phallus in expectation for the sexual act for inseminating Isis to receive Horus. The four sons of Horus are shown as heads of the canoptical jars below the bare. Their names are Amset, Hap, Duamutef and Qebehsenuet. In front of the lions bare stands a platform of victim with wine, oils and a modern papyrus plant. In the front is a basin of water, that is surrounded with stones and in which the crocodile god Sobek swims. In the Egyptian literature of funeral the deceased "becomes" Osiris and from now on he is called "Osiris Hor" (Hor is the actually buried person).

The comparison of this both interpretations is also just an analogy of the human skill of interpretation, because his reason completes a high amount of information from the perception of the world daily and relates itself just to the source of its own past. Thus the memory of the past is always used as a pattern for the interpretation of the present! On what other kind of way can we reach the man's reason then by using stories from the past?

Thoth's Wisdoms

That the ancient Egyptians have been esoteric people is evident, because their words and holy temples, pyramids, cult and priests demonstrated an intensive religion and mysticism. Of course, not all hieroglyphs are crypted symbolically, otherwise it have not been possible such clear translation in other cases.

From the emerald tablets of Hermes Trismegistos Thoth:

"Know, the gate to the life leads through the death, but not as you know the death, but by a death who is the life, the fire and the light."

"Know that your body, if he is totally balanced, can never be touched by the finger of the death." "Yes, even an accident can just appear, if the balance is disappeared." "If you are balanced, you will live forever and you won't know the death."

"Listen to these words of wisdom, listen and make it to your own." Find in it the formless. Find the key to the beyond. Mysteries are just hidden knowledge. Know and you will discover. Find the deep talented wisdom and be a master of darkness and the light."

"Open your soul for the brothers of light." Let them in, so that they can fill you with light. Arise your eyes to the light of cosmos and turn your visage always to the goal. Just by doing this, that you reach the light of all wisdom, you will be one with the infinite goal. Always search the eternal being one, always search the light of the goal."

"Know, oh human being, that the whole space is arranged, because just through order you are one with all." Order and balance are the laws of cosmos. Follow this and you will be one with all."

Remember, oh human being that all that exists is just a form of all, what does not exist. Everything that has a being will enter into another being and you are no exception."

(from the book "Die Smaragdtafeln von Thoth dem Atlanter" )

The ancient Egyptian myth is directly connected to the "Osiris Myth" and is to find in many variants and stories. The research belongs to the oldest, ancient Egyptian texts out of the times of Ramses V. in the year 1160 B.C.

If It's Not Love and Light, it's Illusion
by Rohan and Roaain

Namaste, Friends

We are so many of us knowing
our beliefs are the blueprints
for our experiences of reality.

We know that we experience what we believe.

We are becoming aware
when we believe something
that is not Divine Truth (which is the truest truth),
our beliefs create illusion.

Many of us are coming to know
Divine Truth is All Love and Light -
"The Kingdom is at hand" -
here for us when we believe it.

now we step to understanding
if it is not Love and Light, it is illusion,
we don't have to believe in it -
it's not real,

we can bless it (and bless it and bless it) and let it go.

We continue with following our heart's desire,
letting go of beliefs and illusion that are not Love and Light.
And know
the Kingdom is right here Now.

Blessings for All -
We are All so blessed

Seth - " A Conscious Creation Myth" Part 2 of 15
by Paul M. Helfrich

Introduction

“Dawn of light lying between a silence and sold sources,
“Chased amid fusions of wonder, in moments hardly seen forgotten,
“Coloured in pastures of chance dancing leaves cast spells of challenge,
“Amused but real in thought, we fled from the sea whole.
“Dawn of thought transfered through moments of days undersearching earth
“Revealing corridors of time provoking memories, disjointed but with purpose,
“Craving penetrations offer links with the self instructors sharp
“And tender love as we took to the air, a picture of distance.
“Dawn of our power we amuse redescending as fast as misused
“Expression, as only to teach love as to reveal passion chasing
“Late into corners, and we danced from the ocean.
“Dawn of love sent within us colours of awakening among the many
“Won't to follow, only tunes of a different age.
“As the links span our endless caresses for the freedom of life everlasting.” ~ YES, Tales of Topographic Oceans, 1974.

Tales of Topographic Oceans by Roger Dean

As human history unfolds, old myths calcify and new ones emerge. This has been chronicled by anthropologists (Mead), mythologists (Campbell), and social psychologists (Gebser, Graves, Beck, Wilber). In premodern cultures we find consistent evidence of a Causal Consciousness. While there are variations on Its Origin, Purpose, and Nature, many traditions claim this Casual Consciousness is interpenetrated – holistically nested – within a “Great Chain of Being” that extends from body to soul to Causal Spirit. Many also suggest that Causal Spirit isn’t really “out there” or “up in the sky” somewhere, but literally a part of you, me, and everything around us. In other words, It is simultaneously in the world (immanent) and not of the world (transcendent). Jane Roberts used the term All-That-Is to express this fundamental paradox.

These and other ideas are found in the creation myth presented by Seth in Dreams, “Evolution,” and Value Fulfillment, Vol. 1 (1986). Could this be an emerging postmodern Central Myth that will replace the biblical and Big Bang stories? It is too soon to tell. Our world is changing too quickly to accurately predict what may occur even twenty years from now. But, Seth’s creation myth contains the requisite, important gems from premodern and modern myths, along with many new concepts that may be consonant with twenty-first century thought and beyond.

Jane Roberts began to deliver the Seth material in 1963. Many of the central concepts outlined in the first 800 sessions set the stage for this creation myth. Seth mentioned in the introduction to Dreams, “Evolution,” and Value Fulfillment that it was his most ambitious work to date, though ironically, it was to be his last major theoretical work before Jane Roberts passed away in 1984. As such, this tale forms the pinnacle of Seth’s cosmological and theoretical musings. Related concepts include:

  • All-That-Is/consciousness units (CUs/causal field)
  • sleepwalkers/electromagnetic energy units (EEs/subtle field)
  • Frameworks 4, 3, 2 (subtle field)
  • the dream state (subtle field) functions as a “language of translation” for the waking state (physical field)
  • Framework 1 (physical field)
  • the paradoxical “before the beginning”
  • families of consciousness (innate intention)
  • the multidimensional psyche (outer ego, subconscious, inner ego)
  • the inner senses (deep intuitions/translogical hyperception)
  • reincarnation in the context of simultaneous time frameworks
  • probabilities

To his credit, Seth constantly works around the inherent limitations of English and its penchant for linear cognitive constructs that deal with objects and processes in space and time. Seth uses simple metaphors to explain complex concepts like the emergence of Mind into Matter, Timelessness into Time, Spacelessness into Space, dream oceans, plants, and bodies into physical oceans, plants, and bodies.

Admittedly, this tale is a bit on the esoteric side, and may be difficult to understand for those who are not familiar with the fifteen books that precede Dreams, “Evolution,” and Value Fulfillment. Further, Seth employs a host of metaphors and analogies to describe something that must be directly experienced to be fully understood. As such, his tale, its metaphors and analogies are not to be taken literally because they are easy to distort into premodern or modern dogma. That’s another reason why we are talking about them in the context of myth and intuitive, first person perspectives.

Thus, Seth figuratively describes in linear terms something that is inherently nonlinear – Causal Consciousness dreaming ItSelf into physical form. Is it possible that the creation of the world happened in only seven days? Highly unlikely. Could a Big Bang randomly occur from nothingness? Highly plausible. But what was the origin of the inner world that “preceded” the Big Bang? These perennial questions continue to occupy the best theological, philosophical, and scientific minds due to their paradoxical nature.

The answers, however, seem paradoxical when seen only through a modern worldview limited to five physical senses, third person perspectives, and intellect stripped of intuition and emotions. This is why some get confused and seek comfort in older myths that are simpler and easier to digest. Seth’s tale is subtle, for sure, but like many of his concepts it can only be fully understood through a blend of intuition, emotions, and intellect. Thus, the following abridged compilation and exegesis are only a primer meant to set the stage.

Also, it is easy to get distracted by the large amount of material concerning Jane Roberts’s advancing illness and sinful self material in volume one. Husband Rob Butts included several non-book sessions that, while serving to beautifully elaborate related concepts and the minutiae of everyday life, unfortunately break up the flow of Seth’s original book dictation.

As Rob says in his notes, the process of editing a Seth book for him was not what to include, but what to leave out. So while the original books are solid testaments and worthy creative endeavors to be savored, Seth’s creation myth is so full of paradoxes in terms of modern cause and effect thinking that it is my hope its riches may be more clearly discerned in this abridged format.

According to Seth, the genesis of the Kosmos occurs in each moment. As such, there is literally no beginning and no end because beginning and end are ongoing processes. This primordial action of creation – of genesis – occurs in every quantum pulse, in every moment point of a “Great Chain of Being” that extends from body to soul to Causal Spirit. So we are literally beginning and ending anew in each nanosecond. But we’re getting ahead of the story.

When reading Seth’s words keep in mind that his use of the words “man” and “mankind” is a reflection of the times and that gender-neutral language like “human” and “humankind” was not yet the convention that it is today. Still, it did not seem appropriate to edit and substitute these terms with human or humankind, though I don’t feel that Seth or Jane would have any problem with that.

Finally, by way of introduction I’ve included an excerpt from The Nature of the Psyche: Its Human Expression (in Pt.3) to set the stage for the material that follows from the first five chapters of Dreams, “Evolution,” and Value Fulfillment. I’ve also included a Concept Summary and occasional Comments for subsequent excerpts to highlight basic concepts for further contemplation.

At this point it’s best left to Seth to introduce what I’m calling An Integral Conscious Creation Myth. Enjoy.

“... This tale, I admit, is far more difficult to understand than a simple [premodern] story of God’s creation of the world, or its actual production in a meaningless [modern] universe through the slippery hand of chance – and yet my [postmodern] story is more magnificent because elements of its truth will find resonance in the minds and hearts of those open enough to listen. For men’s minds themselves are alive with the desire to read properly, and they are aware of their own vast heritage. It is not simply that man has a soul that is somehow blessed while the rest of him is not, but that in those terms everything [he knows], regardless of size or degree, is made of ‘soul stuff’.” – Dreams, “Evolution,” and Value Fulfillment, Vol. 1, Session 892, January 02, 1980.

Unreachable You
by Donald R. Johnson

Which of your selves did enter my dream world last night?
I recognize your essence but not your face
And now I am haunted by a feeling of familiarity
Even so, we had a great time, didn't we?
Negotiating the mental constructs as shining mazes
That fell into entire worlds that we created for the purpose

My waking consciousness shies from the concept
I create entire worlds with the smallest thought
What the hell does that truly mean; can I grasp it, really?
ENTIRE WORLDS, OH MY GOD
What beings live in those worlds?
Am I there and are you there as well; what struggles have we?

Echoes of last night's adventure dance at the edge of memory
A pale shadow exists in my mind, and yet, even that
Is sweeter than the mundane tasks in this reality
But in that other world, does an eldritch being, lost in thought
Envy me for my experience here in this place
This unrecognized Utopia, which 6 billion souls sought?

I thought I saw you, reflected in the new thin ice on a pond
In my seriousness, I was annoyed by your unreachable self
Trapped in this place as I am and yet you dare to wink at me!
Perhaps I'll punish you for that when the time comes
But most likely not; the days are just too long
And the sight of you gives me hope for tomorrow

Seth on Christmas
compiled by Paul M. Helfrich

From The Early Sessions: Book 5 of the Seth Material, Session 213, Wednesday, December 01, 1965:

“There were a few remarks that I intended to make concerning the Christmas season, and perhaps I should make them now.

“If it seems to you that there is a great gap existing within Christianity, between ideals expressed, and actions, then let me tell you that conditions would indeed be far worse if these ideals had not initially been expressed, and if they were not yearly reaffirmed.

“As you [Jane and Rob] both suppose, enough constructive psychic energy is generated during the holiday season to recharge psychic batteries, so to speak, for quite some time. Were it not for this your whole race would be in much more serious a predicament.

“One of the reasons, Joseph [Rob], for your own lack of festive spirit in the past has been the result of your realization that this gap between idealism and action is great. You could not therefore enter into what you felt to be hypocrisy of the season. All the more, since you have no particular conviction, anymore than Ruburt [Jane] has, concerning the historic existence of a Christ.

“To some extent, I have explored some of this, but it will do you well to join wholeheartedly into the very necessary spirit of the time, for it is constructive and most beneficial. And, in so doing, you help yourself and others.

“Now: There was no historic Virgin Birth, and no historic Crucifixion. This does not mean that these do not represent symbolic realities.

“... This feeling that Christmas represented hypocrisy has been one of the main reasons for your [Rob’s] own low spirits during the season, for it represented a rather deep disillusionment with the culture in which you were nurtured.

“The legend of Christ is of great psychic import however, and is intrinsically true. This does not mean it is based in historical fact. In many ways it is more true than historic fact, for man himself created that which had not been provided. The creation nevertheless happened in quite real terms, and is part of mankind’s inner recognition of the pyramid gestalts of which I have spoken.

“This was as close as man could come in his imagination to that which is, and this is all right. The basic idea behind Christmas is definitely important, whether or not the intellect is able to see its significance.

“Now: Psychologically alone this is beneficial, for it acts against those feelings of despair that can creep up during the winter season. And by reminding men of a birth and a resurrection it hints at the innate abilities of the race to transcend physical time and space.

“The getting out of oneself that is involved is excellent therapy, and therapy that does others good, as well as the self involved. There is much more here, however. Culturally speaking, there is a strong connection with pagan intuitions, deep and meaningful, that found newer and broader expression.

“The character of Christ as it is portrayed is an excellent one, since it stressed human rather than specifically male qualities. Or should I say it stressed human qualities rather than those unfortunately considered male qualities. It stressed the best qualities of the race as a whole.

“The personality of Christ is an idealization, and a clue to the entity of which each individual personality is composed. And as far as prayer is concerned, though I realize that nether of you pray in those terms, someone does indeed listen. The self who prays listens, and makes necessary adjustments and improvements. For the individual is part of All-That-Is, and therefore partakes of the abilities of the psychic gestalts of which we have so sketchily spoken.”

Seth: The Meaning of Christmas

From ESP Class, December 19, 1972 “Do not think that Christmas is too camp. In your civilization, when you allow it to, it speaks to the child in you. Accept the child and enjoy the myth, for behind the myth there is truth, and the truth is that you are reborn. And the truth is that the inner self does have the wonder of a child.

“Other stories have been wound about those truths, but the truths remain. The god Pan has as great a validity as Christ has. The names change; the stories change to fit your ideas and your civilization. Now, I prefer Pan piping his magic flutes over the countryside and drinking wine, to a Christ born to be crucified. But that is my idea; you pick your own.

“Behind all the myths is the reality. You are born with the wonder of a child again to remake the world in a new image. Christmas should represent the rebirth of the self. Seth Speaks should be called You Speak. So listen to yourselves.

“It is fashionable to think in terms of Buddha and Eastern religions. And it is not fashionable to think of the infant Christ, for example. So you are ‘in’ if you think of Buddha, and ‘out’ if you dare to let a tear show when they play a Christmas carol. The same thing is involved. You are still dealing with systems of beliefs and myths that have grown through the ages. And each of them has their degree of validity and their degree of distortion.

“Santa Claus – Ho Ho – is relatively harmless considering what your religions have done. If you are bad you get a hunk of coal, and if you are good you get a goody. But what about a god who says if you are good you will go to heaven and if you are bad you burn through all eternity? Place your indignation where it belongs!

“All of the gods in your myths die and are rewarded from the time of your ancient memory, and through the ages of the memory of your race. So it is simply said again and again, in terms that you understand, according to the time in which you think you live: That you are born again and again, and the trials of the gods are your own, and so are their triumphs and their joys.

“The symbols used are also colored by the times, and they are personified, so winter and the cold that sweeps across the earth are used to symbolize the death of the soul. Not a death, however, but transformation. If you understood your myths, you could use them effectively. When you think that they are reality, however, they can entrap you.

“You are the stories that the Soul tells. You are your own stories, and you create your ideas of God according to your interpretation of greater realities that you understand and do not understand. You are catching up with your own understanding, but, as soon as you understand, there is more to learn because creativity is never still and never done and never finished.

“In other worlds there are other Christmas tales, each with their own story and rhyme. But none of them denies the intense and eternal NOW which is being forever created and in which you have your quite natural existence. And none of it denies the joyful vitality that is your own, neither the bewilderment in your eye, nor the pleasure in yours. All of this is meant to illuminate the joy and ease of your own being, and meant to generate within you, if you will forgive me, that old Ho-Ho-Ho – the vitality and the laughter and the joy that is your being. If you understood thoroughly what I am trying to say to you, you would be laughing with me and enjoying your own grizzly beard and hair, and, as you looked around at each other, you would see yourselves as all ages, reborn time and time again and with your identity alive within you now.

“The truth is not something apart from you. You each are truth, speaking and living in physical form. Seth Speaks is within you and not in a book. You are the book. Then joyfully listen to what your feelings tell you. Your thoughts and your feelings are both natural and both yours. And your joy is within you, Christmas or non-Christmas, Santa Claus or no Santa Claus, December 25 or the 4th of July. Your atoms and molecules shout with the joy of their own being; listen to them. Feel within their fleshy substance your own spirituality.

“Look at the Christmas tree; your cells and molecules shine a million times more brightly. Your eyes glitter with far greater light. You are love in corporeal form. You do not have to look for it or wonder where to find it or give it in packages with bright ribbon. You are packages with bright ribbon.

“Christmas is now and was yesterday and will be tomorrow. It is in you, in Buddha, in Pan, in Christ, in Mohammed, in an ant and in a frog, and in your eyes and with you, each of you. You are each, then, Christmas. You shine and glitter whether or not you know it. You shout ‘Merry Christmas’ even when you cry. You cannot deny your own vitality or being.

“Let the vitality and energy, therefore, ring out through your own knowledge. Let it awaken within you the knowledge of your being. Dance through your own molecules and scatter your own petals! And I bid you all a merry Christmas!”

The Christmas Tree Lights Analogy

From The “Unknown” Reality, Vol. 2, Session 740, Wednesday, February 26, 1975

“Imagine a string of different-colored Christmas tree lights, all glowing on a given tree. In this series of lights, any one light can go out while the others continue to shine. You are familiar with that arrangement.

“However, in our imaginary assortment there are many such strings, and when a light goes out on one string ‘it’ almost automatically appears on another string. Now generally speaking the lights are all lit at once on any given string, except for those that now and then go out.

“Pretend that you are very tiny, and moving slowly about the tree so that you see only one light at a time. It appears that one light exists before the other, then, and each one is so brilliant to your focus that it blots out the lights before and after it. You may have a dim memory of the light you ‘saw’ before, however, and so you think: ‘Aha, the bulb I see is my life, but I’m sure that long ago I had a different life – and perhaps another one lies ahead of me.’ But unless you step far back from the tree you will not realize that the entire string of lights exists at once. Now will you understand that when one light goes out in a strand it appears somewhere else on the tree in another strand.

“If you were still tinier, then any given bulb itself might seem to emit not a steady light at all, but a series of waves, and you might identify your life with any given wave, so that great distance might be perceived between one wave and the next.

“Experiencing that kind of series could lead to entirely different kinds of perception, in which infinities existed with a scale of its own. (The series would have its own kind of infinities.)

“A tree could be wired with lights, with each one having its own particular series [of waves]. The people who put up the tree might experience one Christmas Eve, while other consciousnesses, tuned in to the different series, could experience endless generations – and their perceptions would be quite as legitimate as those of the light-watchers who had erected the tree.

“This is not necessarily the best analogy, but I wanted t make the point that various scales of awareness contain their own infinities, no matter how infinite they may appear to be.

“The soul, so-called, is not related to size or duration in space and time, except insofar as it is wedded to experience within those contexts.”

Seth on the Christmas Season

From The Individual and the Nature of Mass Events, Session 814, Saturday, October, 08, 1977

“You are literally expected to come down with the flu. It can serve as an excuse for not facing many kinds of problems. Many people are almost consciously aware of what they are doing. All they have to do is pay attention to the suggestions offered so freely by the society. The temperature does rise. Concern causes the throat to become dry. Dormant viruses – which up to now have done no harm – are activated.

“... The flu season intersects with the Christmas season, of course, when Christians are told to be merry and [wish] their fellows a happy return to the natural wonders of childhood, in thought at least. Christianity has become, however, a tangled, sorry tale, its cohesiveness largely vanished. Such a religion becomes isolated from daily life. Many individuals cannot unify the various areas of their belief and feeling, and at Christmas they partially recognize that vast gulf that exists between their scientific beliefs and their religious beliefs. They find themselves unable to cope with such a mental and spiritual dilemma. A psychic depression often results, one that is deepened by the Christmas music and commercial displays, by the religious reminders that the species is made in God’s image, and by the other reminders that the body so given is seemingly incapable of caring for itself and is a natural prey to disease and disaster.

“So the Christmas season carries a man’s hopes in your society, and the flu season mirrors his fears and the gulf between the two.”

“The physician is also a private person, so I speak of him only in his professional capacity, for he usually does the best he can in the belief system that he shares with his fellows. Those beliefs do not exist alone, but are of course intertwined with religious and scientific ones, as separate as they might appear. Christianity has conventionally treated illness as the punishment of God, or as a trial sent by God, to be borne stoically. It has considered man a sinful creature, flawed by original sin, forced to work by the sweat of his brow.

“Science has seen man as an accidental product of an uncaring universe, a creature literally without a center of meaning, where consciousness was the result of a physical mechanism that only happened to come into existence, and that had no reality outside of that structure. Science has at least been consistent in that respect. Christianity, however, officially asks children of sorrow to be joyful and sinners to find a childlike purity; it asks them to love a God who one day will destroy the world, and who will condemn them to hell if they do not adore him.

“Many people, caught between such conflicting beliefs, fall prey to physical ills during the Christmas season particularly. The churches and the hospitals are often the largest buildings in any town, and the only ones open on Sunday without recourse to city ordinances. You cannot divorce your private value systems form your health, and the hospitals often profit from the guilt that religions have instilled in their people.

“I am speaking now of religions so intertwined with social life and community ventures that all sense of basic religious integrity becomes lost. Man is by nature a religious creature.

“One of man’s strongest attributes is religious feeling. It is the part of psychology most often overlooked. There is a natural religious knowledge with which you are born. Ruburt’s [Jane’s] book The Afterdeath Journal of an American Philosopher: The World View of William James explains that feeling very well. It is a biological spirituality translated into verbal terms. It says: ‘Life is a gift (and not a curse). I am a unique, worthy creature in the natural world, which everywhere surrounds me, gives me sustenance, and reminds me of the greater source from which I myself and the world both energy. My body is delightfully suited to its environment, and comes to me, again, from that unknown source which shows itself through all of the events of the physical world.’

“That feeling gives the organism the optimism, the joy, and the ever-abundant energy to grow. It encourages curiosity and creativity, and places the individual in a spiritual world and a natural one at once.”

Is There a God?

“Let me begin humorously by saying:
“Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus,
(and in the same way), “Yes, There is a God.”

“The earth emerges. It is given, like a gift to you at birth. It is there, then, like Santa Claus's toys when you were a child. You ask, Who is the giver? The child accepts the Santa Claus answer for some years and then becomes disillusioned, realizing that the Santa Claus of Christmas tales is a myth. So, in many ways, the stories of a God are myths. But you are still left with a bag of toys on the one hand; and the luxurious Earth on the other. So the question still remains.

“My answer is that the myths, in their own way, try to hint at answers that are basically non-verbal; and at concepts that are, themselves, the fountainhead from which the Earth and all existence springs. Is there a God? Or is there a Being or a Source behind all reality? You have the answer as well as anyone else does. You are as alive and aware as anyone else; and the secrets of your being are also the secrets of Being.

“You must look within yourself, then, for in the last analysis, the beginning and the source of Creativity in being resides in each individual consciousness. In the same way that each tree contains its own seed, so it is to the seed of your own knowing that you must look for such answers. It is only because you tell yourself that you do not know, that the answers seem unavailable.

“This is very briefly the beginning of an answer to a question that of itself initiates other questions, and should, in your mind. Your concern with it, the question, is quite practical whether you know it or not – because your ideas about the nature of reality will color all your actions within physical experience.”

FAIRY
by Cecil Webster

A motionless figure under the huge oak I am
The velvet stillness of the forest is massaged
by the occasional quiet rustling of leaves from above
When the forest breathes

The tree bark is firm against my back
As I sit spreadeagled on soft loamy soil

You laze hardly four feet away
Resting on a huge green leaf
Silver wings translucent
Comfortably watching
Me

A smile reaches for the corners of my mouth
I am at peace
Watching you

The Gates of Fhorn
by Donald R. Johnson

I’d been skimming all of the happy ‘Gates of Horn’ posts in Sethnet and I thought it would be a great thing to try, you know? I mean, it would be an experience like those in the posts but it would be about me instead of them and so it wouldn’t be so boring. Who knows what revelations I might have about my self and what abilities I have or what interesting lives I may have lived.

So, I briefly scanned a few more posts just to get the procedure correct – Let’s see… ‘true dream’… ‘Gates of Horn’… greater self… yeah, ok, that sounds easy enough.

I kept the thought in mind last night while I was trying to fall asleep. I kept thinking of other things that aren’t relevant to this story so I won’t mention them but eventually I fell asleep and dreamed.

I found myself in an office, standing in front of a desk that was almost buried in papers. Behind the desk was a little man, wearing old-fashioned spectacles. He was busily trying to sort the papers, sign papers, and file papers. He didn’t look up, so after a moment, to be polite, I cleared my throat a bit.

He still didn’t look up but he said “State name and business.”

Surprised, I said, “What?”

He said, “Please state your name and business.”

So I said, “Well, I’m Me and I’m here to talk to my greater self and my business is my own, if you don’t mind.”

“Ok, so that’s the way it is,” he said, a bit snottily in my opinion. He continued and now he sounded as if he was reading a prepared speech, “The Greater Self is pleased by your interest but is very busy. Please fill out a request form and He will get back to you as soon as possible.”

Still shuffling papers, he said, “No, wait a minute. I’m the one who’s busy; he’s just in there loafing around.” He gestured with a toss of his head towards a door, “Go on in. Have fun.”

Alright, I thought, that’s more like it. I walked to the door and knocked and then entered the room.

But there was no room on the other side of the door. Instead, I was outside. There was a blue sky with white fluffy clouds, and a green grassy hill. On the hill, only a few feet away was an old man in a white robe, sitting in a lotus position. I could hear a sitar playing faintly. I didn’t know what to do. I mustered up my most respectful tone and said, “Excuse me; I hate to bother you…”

The old man opened one eye just a bit and then both eyes and then he relaxed. “Oh Geez, I thought maybe it was Seth or someone. I like to give the right impression. Let me change.”

His face and hair changed and now he didn’t look old but he kept the robe. “These things are really comfortable, you know? What do you think of the background? Really peaceful, don’t you think?”

“Well sure, I mean, who wouldn’t like it?” I said, ready to butter up the guy; after all, he was my Greater Self. “Wait a minute… I’ve got the same background on my computer. It’s the one that comes with Windows XP!” I laughed.

He said, “I was in a hurry. Let’s just see Bill Gates try to sue Me for using his stuff. Anyway, everyone does it.”

The scene vanished and he was seated on a couch in front of a large-screen television. I found myself collapsed in a beanbag chair. Greater Self was flicking through channels using his index finger in place of a remote.

“So, he said, “What brings you here?”

Eagerly, I started to explain, “Well, you are my greater self and….”

He cut me off, “Are you sure? You don’t look like one of mine. Maybe you are in the wrong place.”

“Wha…! Of course you are my greater self; don’t you know me?” My stomach dropped.

He said, “Ok, let’s see” He flipped through channel after channel. “Not that one, nope, uh uh, not that one either, no, no, no, Ha Ha, nope, nada, oops!” Still looking, “Nope, no, nyet, nah, maybe…no, sorry, nope.”

After several hundred variations on the theme of ‘no’, he finally stopped. “Ah, here we go… I remember now. Wow, I’d forgotten all about you.”

“Well, that explains a lot!” I whined. “Where the hell were you all those times when I…”

“I was busy. I have a lot of things on my mind, you know.” He seemed eager to end our conversation, “Tell you what - you came here to ask me something, didn’t you? So, ask and I’ll see what I can do.”

I was feeling hurt and abandoned but I said “I only came here to ask for a true dream from the Gates of Horn.”

In all of this time, I had been trying to sound intelligent and cultured, so ‘Horn’ came out sounding almost like two syllables instead of one but I thought I sounded good.

He said, “That’s weird, are you sure you want to go there? Most selves ask for the… oh well, if that’s what you want.” He waved his hand across in front of me and everything disappeared.

I found myself standing in the dark. It was raining and I was cold. I could see tall wooden gates in front of me, lit by a torch. They were closed.

I walked up and banged on the gates, or tried to but they were very solid and my hand only made a smacking sound. I saw a metal shield hanging on the wall next to the gates. I picked up the hammer hanging next to it and hammered on the shield, making a lot of noise.

A minute passed. I was getting ready to hit the shield again when I heard someone. A face appeared above one of the gates and a man said, “What do you want! This better be good; it’s raining out here!”

“Well yeah… I know it’s raining,” I yelled. “Open the gates and let me in!”

“No. Go away” he said, “Come back in the morning”

“Wait!” I begged, “These are the Gates of Horn, right?”

“These are the Gates of Horrin” he said.

“That’s Horn”

“Yes… Horrin”

“Horrrrnnn”

“Horr-in”

“Horrin?”

“Yes, this is the Citadel of Horrin, you imbecile!” he shouted.

“These are supposed to be the Gates of Horn, dammit!” I shouted back.

He said “Stop yelling and go away…Oh great, now you’ve done it. Here comes Horrin himself. He’s a great Wizard and he looks pissed off.”

The face disappeared. I could hear snatches of a conversation, “Gates of Horrin… I don’t know…lunatic perhaps, My Lord…” And then, “Go back in, gatekeeper. I know what he wants.”

Another face appeared. I said “Finally, someone in charge!”

Horrin said, “You people make me sick! Learn how to phrase your requests properly and stop coming here!”

I said, “But I just want to find the Gates of…”

With a sneer, Horrin said “Oh yes, I know. Filthy bugger! Be gone!”

There was a flash and I felt different. My eyesight came back quickly and I could see that I was not at Horrin’s gates anymore. I seemed to be in a cavern. I was standing in front of gates again but these were different. They were a gold color and had pink framing. There was a red light above them, giving them and even more garish look and they were open.

I said “Gates of Horn? Jesus, it looks like a brothel”

A woman’s voice said “You’re in luck, sweetie. Jesus doesn’t come here and yes, it is.”

“Oh no!” I said, “These must be the Gates of Whorin’!”

“That’s right. You can find anything you want here!” A hand fell on my arm. I saw lots of rings and nail polish and there were golden bangles on her arm.

I said, “No… I’m not looking for women. I’m trying to find the Gates of…”

She yanked me inside and said “No women? That’s ok, we get all kinds here!”

Much later, someone shoved me out a back door and I fell on the ground. Slowly, I stood up and limped away.

I stood before a set of gates again. These looked a bit better, I thought. The gates were a shining white material and were flanked by a giant statue on each side. The statues were male and kind of godly in appearance but they were facing away from me and I could only see their backs.

I said, “Hello… can th…someone open the gates?” My body felt terrible and there was a bad taste in my mouth, like cheap booze that had been poured from a dirty ashtray.

I heard a voice say, “Did you hear something?” Another voice answered, saying “Something smells like a locker room after a championship basketball game”

“Ha ha, very funny” I said, “Just let me in and forget about the jokes”

“Let you in? I don’t think so. We can abuse you just fine out here.”

“Hey!” I yelled, “I’ve had just about enough crap from everyone. Is that you statues talking? Are you statues talking to me? Why don’t you turn around and say it to my face!”

One said, “I’d rather not have to look at you”. The other statue snickered and said “Right. Maybe we should just pretend he’s not here and he’ll leave.”

I said, “I don’t like your tone. Wait a minute…tone of… these must be the Gates of Scorn!”

One said, “That’s right, dumbass. What did you think.. or do you think?”

Puzzled, I said, “How did I get here? The last I remember, I was… no… best to forget!”

The Other said, “Hmmph. Everyone ends up here after they leave ‘that place’ you were in. It’s just the way it is.”

“Well” I sputtered indignantly, “I didn’t even want to go there! I just wanna find the DamnGatesofHorn!” The last came out in a rush.

One statue said to the other, “You want me to do the honors? Ok, here we go”. Then, to me, “Get lost!”

The Gates of Scorn faded and were replaced by a new set of gates; these were purple and had green vines growing on them. There was a being standing before them. She was golden and had grape leaves in her hair.

I groaned and said, “What are these gates called, please?”

She said “These are the Gates of Fhorn! Happy are you, who arrived….”

“And you must be Fhorn, right?”

“Oh no” she laughed delightfully, “The land is Fhorn and you are just in time for…”

I interrupted, “Excuse me. Do you have paper and a pencil?”

She winked and I felt something in my hand. I was now holding a notepad and a pencil. The notepaper was a pale golden color and was bordered with little fairies and unicorns. The pencil was purple.

I wrote on the notepad, “Can you please help me find the GATES OF HORN? That’s H…O…R…N, horn. Thanks!”

She sighed and said “Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

I blinked and was standing in front of gates again. The gates were made of a pearly material that looked sort of like horn.

On the left of the gates was a giant Statue of an Egyptian God. It had the head of an Ibis and it said, “Welcome, brave traveler, to the Gates of Horn!”

On the right of the gates was a statue of another god. It had a Jackal’s head and it said, “Ask and you shall experience a Dream of Truth!”

I thought about it and said, “If you don’t mind, I think I would like to go home now. I’m really worn out with all of this enlightenment. Sorry.”

Anubis said in a ringing voice, “Hoam? You did say Hoam, right?”

WHAT A COINCIDENCE Understanding Synchronicity In Everyday Life
by Susan M Watkins

Overview:

What if all those seemingly insignificant little What a coincidence! moments you've experienced were actually connected, were part of a larger, more complex coincidence story?

What if they were hinting at something very personal and important about yourself—and about the workings of human consciousness?

Would you listen?

Susan Watkins does. For more than 35 years she's been documenting and studying the coincidences that have happened in her life. What she's discovered is that seemingly simple coincidences—thinking of an old friend and their calling seconds later, for example—are often pieces of larger, more complex and meaningful "coincidence clusters."

A former newspaper reporter and the author of five books, Watkins has always been intrigued by coincidences—what they mean in our everyday lives, and in the grander scheme of things. What, she asks, do these coincidence clusters say about human consciousness and human connection? In What a Coincidence! she presents coincidence clusters that are utterly astounding. What they reveal is life- altering.

What a Coincidence! is an exciting, groundbreaking journey. Along the way Watkins offers profound insights as well as practical pointers on how to become aware of the coincidence clusters in our own lives. She also shows us how to document coincidences so that we, too, can reap their valuable rewards. We'll never brush off those What a Coincidence! moments again.

Greetings from the Portland-Metro Seth Readers' Guild

We meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month. Our first meeting of the month is for reading aloud and commenting. Right now, we are reading "The Early Sessions, Book 4" in the first half of the meeting, then we take a break for drinks and treats and conversation. During the second half of the meeting we have started reading "Seth Speaks". We end the meeting variously with a psy-time, or reading from the Seth deck of cards. Of course the reading goes slowly, because we always have a reason to stop the flow for comments--current events, family or personal tie-ins, etc. This is how we use the material, and it seems to work.

Our second meeting of the month is what we call the experiential

meeting, which can range from a past-life hypnosis psy-time, to a video of interest on a current topic, or a time of general discussion. We did some remote-viewing experiments with pretty good results.

Our meetings start at 7 PM and go to 10 PM. The host provides tea, coffee or other drinks, and we bring finger food. There is networking, friendship, and stimulating talk on all kinds of subjects during the break. We aim to keep our focus on our primary reality, and learn from each other how to deal constructively with the secondary reality of our greater world.

Drop-ins are welcome--call Marie 503-232-6469 or email harakne@yahoo.com for our meeting locations or any cancellations."

Bay Area Seth Group 2005-06 Season!

After a lovely but too-short summer we are ready to ramp up again for even more lively gatherings of the Bay Area Seth Group. We meet the 2nd Saturday of each month from 3-6pm in the Excelsior District of San Francisco (we take off December and June-August). The next gathering is Saturday, September 10th. You can read a general overview at: http://www.consciousnessarts.com/seth_group.html

This year we are going to be even more experiential and will be using the Practice Elements from The Unknown Reality as a jumping off point. We also plan to do some explorations into group dreams. Of course, we are SPONTANEOUS beings and often don't follow our plans at all, so anything can happen!

If you are interested in attending or getting notices of upcoming meetings, please send me your email address and I'll put you on our Evite list.

Blissful Blessings, Kerstin
